Samara is an experimental product development team at Airbnb exploring the future of human connection, building products and services that bring us closer to each other and with ourselves. We work closely with Airbnb, but operate more experimentally with the intention to push cultural and technological boundaries.

We are looking for an experienced Solar and Power Electronics Engineer to play a key role in the design of all the technical aspects related to residential solar and electrical power systems. This includes transmission, solar panels, energy storage, relays and system protection.

Key responsibilities

  • Design photovoltaic (PV) and electrical power systems for residential buildings
  • Integrate the PV system with an energy storage system
  • Perform computer simulation of solar PV generation system performance or energy production to optimize efficiency
  • Perform electrical load calculations for residential buildings
  • Develop standard operating procedures and quality or safety standards for solar and electrical installation work
  • Create plans for solar energy system development, monitoring, and evaluation activities
  • Create electrical single-line diagrams, panel schedules, or connection diagrams for electrical systems using CAD software
  • Create and drive verification and testing protocols
  • Work with the policy team on the permitting and certification process
  • Work with the mechanical team on integration and implementation of custom components
  • Develop relationships with suppliers and specialty advisors
  • Thoroughly document research and development process


Required Qualifications

  • BS in Electrical or other relevant engineering field
  • Strong EE fundamentals
  • 4+ years of industry experience designing residential PV systems, energy storage systems, and residential electrical systems
  • Knowledge of California building and energy code
  • Knowledge of electrical standards and regulations (UL, NEC)
  • Experience with high-voltage electrical systems
  • Experience with electrical power systems: transformers, generators, uninterruptible power systems, power conditioning, power factor correction, harmonics filters, grounding, wiring practices, lightning protection, insulation, arc-flash safety, and EMF interference
  • Proficient in power system software (e.g. PVSYST, SAM)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with net energy metering
  • Knowledge of design for constructability
